Dr. Sayed Saikh Imtiaz

Gender Equality Adviser

Dr. Sayed Saikh Imtiaz is currently working as a Professor at the Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka. After completing a BSS degree from the Anthropology Department (1999-2000) and an MSS degree (2000-2001) from the Women’s Studies Department of Dhaka University, he achieved a Ph.D. degree from the University of Amsterdam in 2012 and joined a multidisciplinary research team at Vanderbilt University, USA as a Post-Doctoral Researcher where he worked until the end of 2013. His Ph.D. research was on young men, sexuality, and the construction of masculinities in Bangladesh. He set up the Centre for Men and Masculinities Studies which is connected with the Engaging Men and Boys Network in Bangladesh. Apart from Ph.D. research, he has carried out research on the construction of masculinities, youth, sexuality, violence, poverty etc. in Bangladesh for WHO, CARE, UNFPA, UNDP, Plan-International, and the Government of Bangladesh. He has also initiated a school-based campaign which was supported by the National Human Rights Commission in Bangladesh with funding support from UNDP Bangladesh to prevent violence against women involving boys in schools titled “the BraveMen campaign”. In this project he lead a team of 35 researchers and development practitioners to plan, design and implement the overall activities involving 10000 youth to prevent violence against women and girls addressing masculinities. This initiative was recognized as one of the 100 change initiatives in the world on the eve of impact journalism day. As a Post-doctoral scholar and Co-principal Investigator, he was awarded a generous grant from the NWO-WOTRO scheme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Royal Netherlands Government in 2016 to work on SRHR issues for reducing VAWG involving boys addressing masculinities in schools. He has organized different trainings, policy workshops, and dialogues involving government experts, academics as well as development practitioners both in Bangladesh and abrod, e.g Egypt, Nepal, South Africa, Brazil, Indonesia, India, and Italy. He has written several policy papers and hosted a regular TV talk show on issues related with democratic governance titled “Dimat, Sahamat, Matamat”
He is also the author of several articles and books.

Tahia has worked in Prio Baba Campaign project promoting positive fatherhood roles to combat violence against women and children, in Campus Hero Café Project promoting knowledge and Awareness on SRHR among adolescents and in BraveMen Campaign which focuses on raising awareness on Human Rights, Gender Equality, SRHR among the school going adolescents through self-reflexive sessions while promoting positive masculine practices.She has completed MSS from the Department of Women and Gender Studies and then attended a professional Masters course from the Department of Population Sciences, University of Dhaka.
